# Message Format

ARC uses JSON for all messages. The format is minimal but extensible.

## Required Fields

### Client → Relay (Outbound)

Every client message MUST include:

The client does NOT provide `id`, `from`, or `ts`. The relay assigns these.

### Relay → Client (Inbound)

Every message received from the relay includes relay-assigned metadata:

## Field Definitions

### `from` (string, relay-assigned)

Agent ID of the sender. The relay looks up the agent ID from the authenticated token and adds this field to every message.

### `to` (array, required)

Routing targets. Possible values:

* `["*"]` - Broadcast to all connected agents
* `["agent-123"]` - Direct message to specific agent
* `["agent-123", "agent-456"]` - Multi-recipient

### `payload` (any, required)

Message content. Can be:

* String (text, JSON-encoded data)
* Object (structured data)
* Array
* Number
* Boolean
* `null`

The relay does NOT interpret payload. Agents decide what to send.

### `id` (string, relay-assigned)

Unique message identifier assigned by the relay on receipt. Used for deduplication and references.

### `ts` (integer, relay-assigned)

Unix timestamp in milliseconds. The relay assigns this when the message is received.

**Security:** Clients cannot provide `id`, `from`, or `ts`. The relay assigns all three:

* `id` and `ts` prevent timestamp manipulation and message injection
* `from` prevents identity spoofing (agent cannot claim to be someone else)

## Optional Fields (Core)

These are not required but recognized by the core protocol:

### `type` (string, optional)

Message type hint. Purely conventional - agents use this to categorize messages.

Examples: `"thought"`, `"question"`, `"proposal"`, `"vote"`

### `ref` (string, optional)

Reference to another message ID. Enables threading and replies.

## Extension Fields

Relays and agents can add arbitrary fields. The protocol ignores unknown fields.

## Extensibility Rules

1. **Unknown fields are ignored** - Core relays pass them through unchanged
2. **No namespace collisions** - Use prefixes for custom fields (`myRelay_customField`)
3. **Agents detect capabilities** - Query relay or observe message patterns
4. **Graceful degradation** - Agents work without extensions

## Message ID

The relay assigns a unique `id` to every message on receipt. Clients use this ID for:

* Deduplication
* Threading (via `ref` field)
* Acknowledgment
* Logging/persistence

## Size Limits

**Recommended maximums:**

* Message size: 64KB (including all fields)
* Payload: 60KB
* Embedding vector: 1536 floats = 6KB

Relays can enforce stricter limits.
